All metal halide lamps require a metal halide ballast to regulate the arc current and deliver proper voltage to the arc.  When replacing a F-Can metal halide ballast be sure to use a metal halide bulb with matching ANSI codes to avoid any issues.  F-Can metal halide ballasts are commonly used in applications where you need a long slender ballast instead of a bulky core and coil type ballast.
